I think it would allow for more people to have an opinion because if you aren't educated on a topic you wont care to have an opinion on it. I think it's necessary for all people to have a basic understanding.

Being able to stand up to governmental and any dogmas you don't believe in and always being willing to question them.
Also choosing the non-violent path in order to show as close as possible unconditional love to others instead of choosing the easy hateful violent path is the bravest thing anyone could ever do.

I don't think it would a lot - although we are seeing more hostile countries in the world the UK is already in the safest situation in NATO so there would be little incentive to keep military spending.
