No, of course not, everyone should be able to see and enjoy nature and we should stop building on our beautiful countryside and do everything that we reasonably can to protect it and the planet. However, I would also not be at ease with my children, or anyone for that matter, having their freedom and safety stolen from them via attacks on private transport and freedom of movement. As someone who lives in rural Wales, over 10 miles away from any public transport, this would destroy my life, I absolutely need a car, as do the majority of people I know otherwise we would have absolutely no quality of life whatsoever, let alone be able to hold down jobs and get to work. We would pretty much be imprisoned in our homes most of the time. Focus on the real contributors: large corporations which pollute to extreme extents, the vast amount of 'recycling' which just ends up in landfill anyway, overpopulation, private jets etc. and on making electric cars more affordable and practical, building more charging stations etc. rather than trying to force people onto hideously inconvenient, practically nonexistent, disgustingly expensive public transport or to walk 25 miles each way to work across fields and single lane, narrow country roads, in the pitch black and all weather extremes, somehow managing to pick up and drop their kids off at school and get the shopping too, let alone being able to visit friends and relatives who do not live around the corner or, god forbid, have a day out to actually enjoy nature. Oh, and their is no fibre here, maximum internet line speed is 10mbps, working from home did not work during lockdown as my internet could not handle two of us on different zoom calls at the same time, this is without taking into account the devastating effects of social isolation on health. As for the idea of car sharing with complete strangers, I would never, ever be comfortable with that for anyone, let alone my children, that would be my worst nightmare having some poor sod end up as the next Sarah Everard from having no choice but to car share with weirdos whose background and intentions you could not reliably safeguard against just to get to essential resources and to work. Be realistic in how you address the climate crisis and you will get more support, most rational people will support a rational, reasonable and proportionate approach. It is simply not realistic, nor will it ever be, for us all to walk, cycle and get the train everywhere, not everyone lives in central London and is able to work from home!
