Treating all receivers of welfare as potential drug addicts is demeaning and discriminatory, and may make those who are struggling less likely to claim the benefits they need to live. Instead, we should decriminalise personal drug use, encouraging addicts to voluntarily seek the help they need.

Drug use should be a health issue and not a criminal issue, better provisions should be in place to support drug users, and if they are unable to access welfare payments they will not only be unable to afford necessities, potentially for them and their families, but are then at higher risk of engaging in criminal activity to fund drug habits or basic necessities. We should focus on supporting people with drug addictions and not criminalising or penalising them. And we should legalise medicinal and recreational marijuana.
