In 2019 conservative leader Boris Johnson proposed a Brexit agreement with the European Union that would take the U.K. out of the EU’s customs area and give it freedom to diverge from EU regulations. Mr. Johnson’s proposal would allow the UK to sign trade deals with the U.S. and other countries. The Labour Party’s proposal would keep the U.K. within the EU customs territory after Brexit and offer voters the choice of staying in the EU in a second referendum.
