Currently UK trains are operated by private franchises and the tracks are operated by the government. Proponents argue that the system would run more efficiently if the tracks and trains were operated by private entities. Opponents of privatization claim that a single government train system would end the disruptions caused by the fractured franchise system.

Let's aim get rid of the useless railways and expand the road network so in the future we have a self drive fast road network.
@9M3DCXS7 days7D
Privatization of the railways has led to increased prices and poor quality of service while shareholders regularly make huge profits.
@9M3CR867 days7D
I just think the strikes are getting out of hand and they need to realise that their actions are getting really selfish as people are losing jobs because of the trains not running.
@9M37DBL1wk1W
Yes. Our Government cannot be trusted with investing into National Rail correctly, have private firms operating under regulations with contract terms and KPIs with Government and Local Authorities. This will encourage increased quality and competition between firms in order to improve costs and efficiency.
@9M2MJZS1wk1W
Yes, but ensure government oversight on ticket prices, service delivery standards and value for service.
@8SPGPKG3yrs3Y
Irrelevant as long as it’s properly funded
@8SPD9823yrs3Y
Look at options to make train travel more affordable
@8SNZ2FG3yrs3Y
Depends on which makes travel more affordable and run more efficiently - assume government running makes it more affordable but private makes it more efficient
Whatever it takes to keep fairs down and make trains more viable than cars
@8SNTBRC3yrs3Y
Yes. And pay back Railtrack shareholders who lost money under Blair's regime
@8SNQSGX3yrs3Y
At this point it would cost far to much to buy railways back but there need to be better regulation (nationally) and control of railway (locally) as some railway are using train the sound of been replaced year ago and others are constantly late or cancelled
@8SN6R4C3yrs3Y
Yes, privatise the operation of the trains and tracks, but ensure companies allow rates for a lower income bracket
@8SN5N883yrs3Y
Run the railway as private companies owned by the tax payer.
@8SHLH5YConservative3yrs3Y
Some Train Operating Companies are unreliable however I am currently happy with the way the railways are being operated.
@8SHH9TYLiberal Democrat3yrs3Y
Profits need to be directed at improving rail services
@8SHDYZF3yrs3Y
Only if the government can make rail services dependable, clean and safe
No, but more funds and resources must be used to modernise and improve the current systems.
@8SFNPXG3yrs3Y
Yes, but not in its entirety, only aspects of itm
what I didn't read the question
@8SDF5J2Liberal Democrat3yrs3Y
Have better aligned and clearer incentives for train and tracker operators with clear accountability
@8SDB4B33yrs3Y
If it makes them quicker then yeh
No, national railway travel is already becoming too expensive to be considered manageable at present
@8SBVSKV3yrs3Y
The government should lease the tracks to ensure they get enough money from travel
whoever wants to enter the private railway industry should be able to do so.
@8S9SHS73yrs3Y
Whatever is best value.
They can have their choice
@8S98TTKConservative3yrs3Y
Yes but at affordable travel
@8S97RZ9Conservative3yrs3Y
Trains should be run as one heavily regulated business. The government are too short sighted
Yes but with fare control
@8S7VYMD3yrs3Y
I'm unsure about this one.
@8S7K2RT3yrs3Y
we should have the railways ran by companies that are owned by the state. State capitalism
@8S7CTKB3yrs3Y
No, but the government can privatise systems where the contract holder is failing.
@8S77NHLLiberal Democrat3yrs3Y
Privatisation jeans profit which is counter intuitive to inexpensive green travel ... however without investment from fares needed upgrades cannot be achieved. Privatisation happened because the government did not up grade do there has to be a balance between government and the franchise holders ... what we have now nay be he fear if both worlds even if not perfect
@8S5LRH83yrs3Y
Yes but increased regulation and better demand better services
@8S5KYHS3yrs3Y
No, but increased investment is needed to update aging infrastructure
@8S5CBGL3yrs3Y
National to sport put current problems and them privatise when ruining issues are sorted
@8S4Z454Liberal Democrat3yrs3Y
No, privatisation is almost impossible of the railway without cutting essential services.
Rail companies should be independent government
@8S4BRBV3yrs3Y
The government should privatise all current nationalised industries
@8S44KX23yrs3Y
All government owned industries should be privatised and free from government control
@8S3QSVP3yrs3Y
Rail travel could be private but there must be strict rules to be adhered to and if they don’t then they lose their franchise
@8S3NRSC3yrs3Y
Keep the railway system how it is
@8S34GLJ3yrs3Y
Competent privatisation.
@8S2VRY43yrs3Y
Yes, but only partially privatised. Rail infrastructure should be publicly owned and rail operators can be private firms but closely regulated by the government.
@8S2RRP63yrs3Y
Allow govt to bid alongside private operators and assess best for the job
@8S2JV6M3yrs3Y
Equal control between the gov. And private companies.
@8S2FBQTLiberal Democrat3yrs3Y
Abolish multiple franchises and have one main operator
Independantly operated but accountability to public body decisions.
@8RM4X6G3yrs3Y
Yes, replicate japanese private sector model
