No other alternative is suggested. Defunding the police will have consequences. Police are already overworked and overstretched. It is no longer a job for life and there is a brain drain and loss of experienced officers and staff staying in policing. This is due to changes in conditions and remit of role. Massive increases in Mental heath workload that isn't really police responsibility but an issue with NHS but falls to policing as the NHS can't cope.

Money could be put into training Police to be less racist, sexist, and corrupt. Money can be put into reforming the police service, and having more community officers that genuinely engage with the community, not harrass them.

There is far too much spending on totalitarian aspects of the police, if you divert that funding into levelling up deprived areas you create less criminals. Ideally there should be a non-lethal community-based reaction force put in place of the police as then you’ll have far less corruption, racism, sexism, homophobia and transphobia running rampant in the criminal justice system.
