We have 14 % of our population in poverty and we are wasting money on people who don't matter and not looking after the people that do.

Foreign aid is a method through which to attain allies and maintain global peace, whilst making others' lives better.

If we give more foreign aid and development to other countries, we can form strong alliances, bonds and partnerships that are mutually benefitial.

Aid has been much maligned but is completely misunderstood. Long gone are the days where dictatorial governments line their pockets with British aid - aid now is highly targeted and DFID was the most audited government department with every penny accounted for carefully. The UK’s influence around the world depends on development aid, and in the global axis now with Russia and China keen to build ties with mineral rich African states in particular, this has a significant impact.

Foremost it is a basic humanitarian response. We live in a global community where we should be aware and sympathetic to the needs of others. It is also a means to increase the UK's influence around the world and foster long term trade relations which will ultimately benefit all concerned. It may also provide a means to prevent vulnerable nations falling into the wrong company, guide them on a path of democracy instead of dictatorship, persecution of their citizens or the influence of cartels etc.

If our country ends up in a position where we require aid, then other countries would not want to provide for us since we acted selfishly when they needed the help
