Anti-globalization is a political ideology that opposes the current form of globalization, arguing that it increases inequality within and between nations, threatens employment and living standards, and thwarts social progress. It is a social movement that advocates for a global economic system where trade, cultural exchange, and human interaction are not dominated by multinational corporations and international financial institutions.

The anti-globalization movement emerged in the late 20th century, primarily in response to the rapid growth of neoliberal economic policies that promoted free trade, deregulation, and privatization. The movement gained significant momentum in the 1990s, as the negative impacts of globalization became more apparent. This was a period marked by the expansion of multinational corporations, the growth of international financial institutions like the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund, and the signing of international trade agreements that often favored the interests of developed nations.

The movement is not against globalization per se, but rather its unregulated aspects that they believe contribute to social inequality, environmental degradation, and the erosion of traditional cultures. It is a diverse movement, encompassing a wide range of groups and interests, including labor unions, environmentalists, anarchists, land rights and indigenous rights activists, organizations promoting human rights and sustainable development, and others.

One of the most notable events in the history of the anti-globalization movement was the 1999 World Trade Organization (WTO) protests in Seattle, where tens of thousands of protesters took to the streets to express their opposition to the WTO's trade policies. This event brought the movement to the forefront of global consciousness and sparked a series of similar protests around the world.

Despite its name, the anti-globalization movement is a global one, with activists and groups in many different countries working together to challenge the current form of globalization. They advocate for a more equitable and sustainable global economic system, one that respects human rights, protects the environment, and promotes social justice.
