High Speed 2 is a planned high-speed railway between London Euston to central Scotland. The project is being developed by High Speed Two Ltd, a company limited by guarantee established by the UK government. Four major city centres shall be served directly: London, Birmingham, Leeds and Manchester. From November 2021 to June 2022 substantial parts of HS2 were dropped. As part of the Integrated Rail Plan for the North and Midlands it was announced that most of the eastern leg of phase 2b from Birmingham via the East Midlands to Leeds/York would be dropped. Supporters of the project believe that the additional capacity and reliability provided by HS2 will cater for pre-COVID rising passenger numbers while driving further modal shift to rail. Opponents believe that the project is neither environmentally nor financially sustainable.

No, a separate freight transport rail network would be cheaper and would allow improvements to existing passenger services
@9NRRV9J10mos10MO
Yes, but extend it to Scotland as well as improve existing networks to be as fast and efficient as HS2
@9NCDRJQ10mos10MO
Yes, but east to west transport country wide is lacking, forcing everyone to the same points such as London only increases problems
@9N5ZVJ610mos10MO
Yes and also the northern link as originally promised otherwise it has been a complete waste of money.
@9M6G4D2Count Binface11mos11MO
No, it serves only to turn the West Midlands into dormitory towns for London for the benefit of landlords and businesses rather than addressing the problems of cost of living in the capital.
@9M47XPZ11mos11MO
The money should focus on improving connectivity from major cities to the underserved communities across the country
@9LX946V11mos11MO
Only if it is reliable and strikes are not allowed, or people wouldn't use it...i never book travel by train because of this
@9LTRHPH11mos11MO
We should yes and possibly extend it to Scotland and eventually linking up all the major UK cities. But it must be done via all green technology not damaging the environment. Plus eventually linking all of the UK even smaller towns, however, this can cost a lot of money so should be done over multiple of decades and should be something no one Primeminister can abolish except if it has gotten so bad they hold a referendum and the British public vote in a majority yes to stop the project.
@9LJTTHN12mos12MO
If we build those and destroy the environment for those areas, it is only fitting to remove previous existing other areas of the railway system to make space for the environment to grow again elsewhere. So my answer is yes we can build it, on the condition that railways elsewhere are removed and instead replaced with equal green areas
@B28YX733mos3MO
HS2 mush be built in full if it is to deliver all of the capacity enhancement benefits. Euston must also be built with all 11 platforms
@B282FZQLiberal Democrat3mos3MO
Support in theory, but government should be prepared to cancel the project if costs continue to spiral
@9QJWJ699mos9MO
No, the project has outlived its budget already and still nothing has been built. Stop now, before even more costs are incurred and more lives are unnecessarily uprooted!
@9PYQ78P9mos9MO
Yes but it should be done with strict funding limits and contracts that don't inflate and reward bad efficiency.
@9PQM7MB9mos9MO
I support the construction of the additional line, but it should not be made to HS standards as this adds very significant cost
@9PNSR7Y9mos9MO
Yes, but every effort should be made to make it carbon neutral and have the lowest impact it can on the environment.
@9K3487G1yr1Y
No, our government should not be able to force people out of their homes or take farmers’ land away for any project no matter how much it’s ‘needed’.
@9D8FLHX 1yr1Y
No we should link east to west rather than add to the numerous number of existing train lines linking south to north
@9GPHZHD1yr1Y
Public transport needs seem to have changed radically since HS2 was initially conceived so a review should be conducted. There should be more investment in further public transport in the North of England but I'm guessing the money could be better spent on something else other than HS2
@9FVKSV61yr1Y
I think it's only right to enable the Midlands and the north to boost their local economy. However, I also see that it is interfering with the landscape and causing disruptions. It's a very difficult topic.
@9FLR736 2yrs2Y
We should improve existing rail networks and spend more time and money on connecting the Midland/Northern cities to each other and to the South.
@9FGJBWF2yrs2Y
At this point it should go ahead
@9KVQXCKConservative1yr1Y
No, I don’t see the point. If it was connecting london to Edinburgh I would understand more but just london to Birmingham is pointless
@9KMC5MC1yr1Y
it's good for transport but there's already good/ sufficient links so we should focus efforts elsewhere
@9BX9JNV2yrs2Y
Yes, but not in our current economic climate
@9BQQYLB2yrs2Y
No - the high speed rail link has devastated the area I live in. Kent is slowly being paved over with unaffordable housing sold to Londoners.
@9BPZYL72yrs2Y
@9BN3H8S2yrs2Y
Only if it does not irreparably damage British wildlife
@9BLTZ7H2yrs2Y
no because its taken so long and so much money with no progress
@964K76H2yrs2Y
I think the HS2 line should be built but on a route that would not disrupt existing wildlife and housing.
Depends how good it is for the environment
@95WJSVF3yrs3Y
Not until the cost of living crisis is mostly over
@9454R4W3yrs3Y
yes as long as it is sustainable
@944WJZ23yrs3Y
Yes, but ensure that construction and operation is carried out privately with minimal government involvement
@944R8GC3yrs3Y
Yes but I think there should be more stops
@93R47PF3yrs3Y
Now it's started, it has to continue...too much to lose now, and two many people already put out. Hopefully it will be anenvironment advantage in the future
@93NLBLL3yrs3Y
Yes as long as the budget isn’t too large and possibly make it eco friendly maybe electric
@93L89WF3yrs3Y
Yes if it actually connected scotland, north England and Europe. Plus takes carriages for cars and trucks.
@93KZD2H3yrs3Y
Instead of just 2 high speed lines, build an entire network similar to France or Japan
@93HRTR83yrs3Y
We should use a system similar to Japans
@93FL85Q3yrs3Y
yes but do it in an environmentally friendly way
I, honestly, have no idea
@93C79SV3yrs3Y
Yes, but only if it is a bottom-up project that is as sustainable as it can be.
@935XFBF3yrs3Y
Yes it should be built, but they should stick to the original plan and remain environmentally friendly and not cause destruction to towns and homeowners.
@92RC4TH3yrs3Y
I feel the money used for this project could be allocated to fund other more important projects.
@92Q4RSN3yrs3Y
Yes - good for travel No - bad for the environment
@92P7NTP3yrs3Y
Yes, but only if it is safe and is sturdy
@92N8B4J3yrs3Y
birmingham is a poo hole
@92FZMMKScottish Green3yrs3Y
I have mixed feelings about this issue
@8Z84FWNConservative3yrs3Y
It’s creation in the long run is positive, but the taxpayer cost is un-favoured.
@8Z7TW923yrs3Y
It should run all the way to Wick
@8Z44XV63yrs3Y
I can see the benefits of dispersing businesses throughout the UK. But maybe it would be more beneficial to improve existing links first
@8YW9TQN3yrs3Y
Yes, extend it to Scotland and improve all existing transport links via the construction of more HS lines akin to Shinkansen lines in Japan, and build more motorways and finish off/significantly improve motorway projects to such as the M2, M57, M58, and M67 whilst providing an environmentally friendly way of going about it by significantly restricting construction through national parks, etc.
@8YNG8N7Conservative3yrs3Y
Yes as long as it doesn't effect the wildlife around the area
@8YFCGPQ3yrs3Y
I'd prefer if existing railway networks were improved as well as nationalized, but I'm not too bothered.
@8YB22XS3yrs3Y
Yes but we have to protect the environment
@8Y39G963yrs3Y
Yes, as long as the trains that use it are electric.
Yes, but the impact on the environment should be considered
@8XRM65M3yrs3Y
I need to do more research on this topic
@8XK842V3yrs3Y
it’s already started now might aswell
@8XCL57L3yrs3Y
I dont see whats wrong with
@8XCL52JWomen's Equality3yrs3Y
i think that it should be there for people in emergency's that need to get to work fast but to use this they need a reason either for urgent work hospital visits (emergency) or anything really important.
@8WGSP8V3yrs3Y
Yes, extend it to Scotland and build the HS2 network in full, which includes the Eastern leg.
@8WGP7G73yrs3Y
If it helps with transport, yes
@8WBCRCB3yrs3Y
No, not because I hate the North, but because of the environmental damage.
@8W5F4PC4yrs4Y
No because resources are being taken from wales and scotland to build it
The people would be asked via Liquid Democracy immediately if a Liquid Democracy party got into power.
@8VGCXPTConservative4yrs4Y
Yes, but it must be electric
@8TMNHJV4yrs4Y
It should connect cities outside of London, not to London
@8TKC93Y4yrs4Y
Yes as long as natural habitats are protected
@8TGBMTV4yrs4Y
@8TCCHXY4yrs4Y
I am open to it as long as we build more trains with renewable/environmentally friendly materials.
@8TBP4CW4yrs4Y
Only if it is electro-magnetic.
@8TBN64L4yrs4Y
Yes but the project needs to be managed better
@8T8D8TR4yrs4Y
why would anyone want to go to birmingham
@8SYM9DR4yrs4Y
Maybe, depending on if it would be publicly or privately funded.
@8SXS7Z24yrs4Y
yes but we should also improve existing rail networks as well
@8SWRGZ94yrs4Y
Yes, but more care should be placed on protecting wildlife and woodland
@8SW7CJQ4yrs4Y
Yes, but not at the cost of nature Such as cutting trees down.
@8SVW5F94yrs4Y
We should improve primary railways first and consider the danger to the environment.
@8SR8TJXConservative4yrs4Y
I support the Elon Musk high speed train.
@8SJSS2TLiberal Democrat4yrs4Y
Yes, but we should also put funding in place to support and improve existing rail networks
@8S9FYSJLiberal Democrat4yrs4Y
Phase 2 is more important to ensure the north is well connected but phase 1 is less important when a high speed railway is already in place between london and Birmingham.
@8S7VYMD4yrs4Y
I'm unsure about this one.
@8RSXK6Z4yrs4Y
Yes, but not by the deforestation of trees in Buckinghamshire
@8RMLZNJ4yrs4Y
No, more emphasis should be put on hyperloop technology
@8RM5NWS4yrs4Y
Yes and we should improve existing infrastructure
@AustenB4yrs4Y
Yes as long as it is built in an environmentally friendly way.
@8R9CRZL4yrs4Y
Yes, but cancel the second phases to Leeds and Manchester and work on local rail here instead.
@8QV8G674yrs4Y
No, spend the money on improving regional (east-west) connections and current lines
@8QGR7NCConservative4yrs4Y
Only if intercity rail travel becomes affordable
It's too late to do anything with HS2. It's going ahead by the Government whether we like it or not.
@8QCHS9D4yrs4Y
Yes but improve existing infrastructure
do not have an opinion on this subject
@8Q8PV8G4yrs4Y
I had not heard of this previously
@8Q8NMWB4yrs4Y
No, as it can destruct wildlife and nature habitats and so many homes have been removed
@8Q6R2S74yrs4Y
i like the idea but we are destroying wildlife
@8Q44MTH4yrs4Y
There are different economic effects for different people.. the farmers and people who work the land livelihoods are being damaged
@8Q3WMVV4yrs4Y
Yes, but also focus on improving existing rail networks
@8PYGSSF4yrs4Y
yes, and it's extension, but only provided it is cost-effective and ecologically viable
