Can a person's hobbies and interests reflect their social status, and is that important?

It sounds like a fairly plausible and logical statement to me that a person's hobbies and interests may likely reflect their social status, as not all hobbies cost the same amount to pursue (for example almost anybody can participate in football because it doesn't really cost anything, but the same is not true for some other sports and entertainment activities such as horseback riding or go-karting where participants likely have to join clubs or pay for equipment and lessons which results in an economic barrier that limits the possibility for low-income people to get involved). I…  Read more think it is somewhat important, as it means that there is a possibility that participation (or lack thereof) in certain activities can carry with it certain labels related to ones socioeconomic situation. That could have detrimental effects for example in schools it could lead to bullying or social ostracism. So it is worth considering the importance of this at the very least.
