Smart transportation infrastructure uses advanced technology, such as smart traffic lights and connected vehicles, to improve traffic flow and safety. Proponents argue that it enhances efficiency, reduces congestion, and improves safety through better technology. Opponents argue that it is costly, may face technical challenges, and requires significant maintenance and upgrades.

Yes
Smart motorways are proving ineffective against broken down vehicles and emergencies. This could be improved with better monitoring, but it also requires drivers to pay more attention on the roads. The safest option is a hard shoulder which is only used in emergencies so a broken down vehicle is not in a live lane of traffic. Smart motorways are not updated effectively when a vehicle is removed causing congestion via speed limits which are no longer relevant.
@9PJSJT85mos5MO
Yes but only if they don’t harm others, eg smart motorways removing hard shoulder = less chance of survival
@9MY5PP3Liberal Democrat6mos6MO
The Government should increase and improve existing services.
@9QLBZN85mos5MO
Yes, only if it is accompanied by reducing the amount of car traffic on the road alongside the development of affordable public transport that is owned by the public
@9QK3MJL5mos5MO
Only if self-funded and not offered to private organisations, turns into a waste of money that never ends up getting delivered, too much profiteering. Hire directly for departments and resolve in-house.
@9QDKMQ45mos5MO
NO! They should invest in the infrastructure to maintain the quality of the roads for ALL users. They have an MOT to make cars roadworthy, but the roads aren’t car-worthy as they are at the moment.
@9Q2MYRX5mos5MO
Repair the basic state of the roads first. Repair potholes, clean roadsigns, repaint lines on the road etc
@9PXRY2T5mos5MO
It depends on what mode of transport, maybe public transport should be developed but not personal vehicles which would contribute more to CO2 emissions.
@9MXFG7N6mos6MO
Invest in maintenance of current infrastructure roads and improve rail and bus services
@9MWVX59Liberal Democrat6mos6MO
Yes but ensure it is safe and will last a long time.
@9MW3F8J6mos6MO
No, there are better areas to invest in such as public transport
@9MVX26Y6mos6MO
No, it should invest in high quality and well subsidised public transportation
@9MT2LGJ 6mos6MO
Yes but not at the moment when we have a deficit, there are more important things to spend money on
@9MPX63B6mos6MO
Yes, but after a full review and with appropriate safety measures
@9MLRL6J6mos6MO
Yes but not how it was done before, smart motorways
@9MLQGR46mos6MO
What "Smart transportation infrastructure" is is very loosely defined, ranging from AI-powered speeding cameras to high speed rail
@9P6LYBDConservative5mos5MO
No, smart motorways are useless, removing the hard shoulder to create an extra lane causes confusion and a massive headache for cars that break down
@9P3YQS6 5mos5MO
Smart motorways haven't been a great success so I'm very hesitant about implementing any more 'smart' tech
Until the technology is proven to be cheaper and technologically important, the research and testing should be more important
@9PMSJMDLiberal Democrat5mos5MO
This should be considered in future, however, much of the technology is not yet advanced enough for this to be sustainable or safe
@9P4K8WV5mos5MO
Yes, to the extent that developments are only made and maintained in areas that are more built up and have the infrastructure in place to support these developments.
@9NF9ZHD6mos6MO
They should redo the whole train lines and make trains the same as the new Elizabeth line and better buses however the issue isn’t to do with smart infrastructure but rather the cost of things with TfL and transport being super expensive in the uk and on top ULEZ charges. Theres no point in wasting publics tax money to build these smart infrastructure when either way whether old or new transportation it’s equally costly.
@9NM3C9S6mos6MO
This depends on cost and whether it takes money away from more important issues, such as poverty, healthcare and education.
@9NJL3HB6mos6MO
If you mean smart motorways then no.. i have never believed they are safe and still dont think they are a viable option.
