For the first time, Israel and Hamas have been added to a United Nations blacklist for committing grave violations against children's rights, highlighting an 'unprecedented' spike in violence.
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres cited a 155% increase in such violations amidst the ongoing conflict, including killing and maiming of those under 18. The inclusion in the annual Children and Armed Conflict report aims to name and shame parties responsible for recruiting, killing, maiming, abducting children, or committing sexual violence against them.
This move comes as violence against children in war zones, particularly in Gaza and Sudan, has reached extreme levels in 2023, according to the UN.
