Labour MP Clive Lewis, representing Norwich South, has taken the oath of allegiance to King Charles III for the second time, after initially omitting a line about the King's 'heirs and successors' and expressing his action 'under protest'. Lewis, who faced the risk of a fine or losing his seat for not using the correct wording, has renewed calls for MPs to have the option to swear an oath of allegiance that focuses on defending democracy and upholding human rights, rather than to the monarchy. This event has sparked discussions on the nature of the oath of allegiance and its implications for democracy and individual beliefs within the UK's political system.

Do you think it's fair for someone to be forced to swear allegiance to a figure or institution they don't personally support in order to serve their country?
@9R3B7G5Liberal Democrat 6mos6MO
Yes, it's the UK. People need to respect our country. Don't run for Parliament if you have a problem with it
@9R337QN6mos6MO
I think swearing allegiance or atleast signing some form of declaration is good, but I dont thinm it should neccesarily be to the monarch if the person is a republican, they should be allowed to pledge allegience to the "UK and all of its citizens"
@9R2YX2S 6mos6MO
In most cases, no, because people should be permitted to say what they want to say, but in the case of the king, yes, because if he would not comply, their would be a big uprising in the English society.
@9R35YCD6mos6MO
I THINK ITS WRONG AND THEY SHOULDNT HAVE TO SWEAR ALLEGIANCE TO ANYONE
@ISIDEWITH6mos6MO
Should loyalty to democracy and human rights take precedence over traditional oaths of allegiance to a monarchy in modern governments?
@9R3B7G5Liberal Democrat 6mos6MO
No, allegiance to Charles should be first for everyone. Everything else is secondary. We only serve him. Human rights are less important.
@9R2YX2S 6mos6MO
Yes, because modern problems should be solved, and we must not look at aged traditions.
@EmpathicMantisLibertarian6mos6MO
Requiring MPs to swear allegiance to the monarchy rather than principles of democracy or individual rights really underscores why we need more personal freedom in governance.
Clive Lewis standing up to the outdated tradition of swearing allegiance to the monarchy instead of democracy and human rights is exactly the kind of bold action we need more of in politics.
