France Ramps Up Security for Olympics with 'Ring of Steel' and Preemptive Arrests

In anticipation of the Olympic Games, French authorities have significantly heightened security measures, deploying approximately 1,000 elite anti-terrorist officers to protect the Israeli delegation amidst threats.

This security enhancement, described as a 'ring of steel,' aims to safeguard participants against potential terrorist activities. Additionally, in a sweeping security operation, French police have placed 155 individuals under what is effectively house arrest, despite the absence of a clear threat to the Games as confirmed by both French and foreign intelligence services. Among those affected is a French paramedic, Seifelislam Benadda, who was unexpectedly restricted from leaving his hometown due to concerns over his potential threat to the Olympics.

These measures have sparked a debate on the balance between security and civil liberties, with some of the preemptive arrests being overturned by courts.
