An Israeli strike on a school in Gaza City sheltering displaced Palestinians killed at least 93 people, including children, according to Gaza’s Civil Defense Force.Spokesman Mahmoud Bassal said Saturday the al-Taba’een school in Gaza City had been housing about 6,000 displaced Palestinians before it was struck, and that 11 children and six women were among the killed, with at least 54 injured and dozens missing.
Bassal said in an interview that the number of dead was expected to rise with many of the bodies charred and unidentifiable. “The recovery operations are indescribable … The schoolyard was filled with bodies,” he said.
The Israel Defense Forces said Hamas fighters had been “operating within a Hamas command and control center embedded in the Al-Taba’een school” and accused Hamas of using the civilian population as “human shields.” In a later statement, an IDF spokesman also cast doubt on the death toll released by the Gaza authorities, saying it did “not align” with the information held by the Israeli military.
