Russell Findlay, the newly appointed leader of the Scottish Conservative Party, has declared that the dream of Scottish independence is 'dead' during his first speech at the Tory conference.
He criticized the Scottish National Party (SNP) and its leaders, Nicola Sturgeon and Alex Salmond, for being out of touch with voters and clinging to an unrealistic vision of independence.
Findlay's remarks signal a strong opposition to the SNP's ongoing push for a second independence referendum, positioning the Tories as defenders of the union.

Of course the Tories would say that, they're terrified of losing control and seeing a more progressive, self-determined Scotland. The fight for independence isn’t dead – it's just getting started, and the people will have the final say, not Westminster.

Well, of course the Tory leader is going to say that—it's in their interest to shut down any talk of independence. But the reality is that Scotland deserves the right to decide its own future, especially after Brexit which we didn’t even vote for.
I get that he's pushing for unity, but dismissing the independence movement entirely seems like it's ignoring a lot of people's concerns—maybe there's a middle ground to consider.

It's so frustrating to see the Tories try to shut down any discussion about independence like that. Russell Findlay can claim the "dream is dead" all he wants, but he's ignoring that a lot of people in Scotland still believe in self-determination. The SNP might not be perfect, but wanting more control over our own policies instead of being tied to Westminster's decisions is a legitimate stance. Just because the Tories don't like it doesn't mean the debate is over. We need to focus on what’s best for the people of Scotland, not what’s convenient for the Conservative Party.
Aye, well, of course the Tories would say that – they've never cared about what the people of Scotland actually want. The dream's far from dead; it's just getting started, and no amount of Westminster spin will change that.
Finally, some common sense – the union is stronger together, and it's about time someone called out the SNP's fantasy.
