The NFL is reviewing a postgame episode Sunday night in which San Francisco 49ers defensive end Nick Bosa wore a “Make America Great Again” hat during NBC’s interviews.Bosa is not facing a suspension but could be fined for violating NFL rules, according to a person familiar with the matter.
No decision is expected before next week.
Bosa appeared in NBC’s camera shot, wearing the hat in apparent support of Republican presidential candidate and former president Donald Trump, as the network was conducting a postgame interview Sunday night with 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy, tight end George Kittle and running back Isaac Guerendo.
The 49ers had beaten the Dallas Cowboys in Santa Clara, California, on “Sunday Night Football.” Bosa quickly exited the camera shot, and the interview continued.
NFL rules say that players “are prohibited from wearing, displaying, or otherwise conveying personal messages either in writing or illustration, unless such message has been approved in advance by the League office.”
The rules say those prohibitions apply on game days whenever a player “is visible to the stadium and television audience,” including during “postgame interviews in the locker room or on the field.” The rules say the league “will not grant permission for any club or player to wear, display, or otherwise convey messages … which relate to political activities or causes, other non-football events, causes or campaigns, or charitable causes or campaigns.”
“I’m not going to talk too much about it,” Bosa said then.
“But I think it’s an important time.”
The Cowboys-49ers game averaged 23.9 million viewers across NBC, Peacock and digital platforms, according to NBC Sports.
