Myanmar recorded the highest number of landmine victims in 2023, with over 1,000 people killed or injured by landmines and unexploded munitions, according to a monitoring report.
The true number of casualties could be significantly higher, as the report suggests the toll may be double or triple the official estimate. Civilians, including children, made up the majority of the victims, accounting for 84% of the casualties. The country’s decades-long conflict between the military and ethnic rebel groups has left large areas contaminated with deadly explosives.
The ongoing violence and lack of demining efforts continue to pose a severe threat to the population.
