The UK government has approved the £9 billion Lower Thames Crossing, a major infrastructure project aimed at reducing congestion on the Dartford Crossing.
The project includes the construction of the country's longest road tunnel, spanning 2.6 miles beneath the River Thames, connecting Kent and Essex. Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander signed off on the plan, which has been in development for 16 years. The crossing will link key motorways, including the A2, M2, A13, and M25, to improve traffic flow in the region.
The total cost of the project is estimated to be between £8.3 billion and £10 billion.
