The UK government is overhauling its standards regime by establishing a new independent Ethics and Integrity Commission to enforce stricter rules on ministers and public officials.
Ministers who breach conduct rules or serve less than six months will lose their severance pay, ending the so-called 'golden goodbyes' that have cost taxpayers millions. The existing post-ministerial jobs watchdog, Acoba, will be abolished and replaced with a tougher system that includes financial penalties for those who break lobbying or revolving-door rules. These reforms aim to restore public trust and accountability in government following years of criticism over lax enforcement and political scandals.
The changes are set to take effect from October.
