UK Launches Tough New Ethics Watchdog and Slashes 'Golden Goodbyes' for Rule-Breaking Ministers
The UK government is overhauling its standards regime by establishing a new independent Ethics and Integrity Commission, replacing the much-criticized ACOBA watchdog.
Ministers who breach conduct rules or serve less than six months will lose their severance pay, ending the practice of large 'golden goodbyes' for short-term or disgraced officials. The new commission will have stronger enforcement powers, including financial penalties for those who break post-ministerial lobbying rules. These reforms aim to restore public trust and accountability in government after years of scandals and criticism over lax oversight.
The changes fulfill a key Labour manifesto promise to clean up standards in public life.
