UK Launches Tough New Ethics Watchdog and Slashes 'Golden Goodbyes' for Rule-Breaking Ministers

The UK government is overhauling its standards regime by establishing a new independent Ethics and Integrity Commission to enforce stricter rules on ministers' conduct.

Ministers who breach ethical rules or serve less than six months will lose their severance pay, ending the practice of 'golden goodbyes' for those ousted for misconduct. The existing post-ministerial jobs watchdog, Acoba, will be abolished and replaced with a tougher system that includes financial penalties for breaking lobbying rules. These reforms aim to restore public trust and accountability in government after years of criticism over lax standards and costly payouts.

The changes are set to take effect from October.
