The UK government is overhauling its standards regime by establishing a new independent Ethics and Integrity Commission to enforce stricter rules on ministers' conduct.
Ministers who breach ethical rules or serve less than six months will lose their severance pay, ending the practice of 'golden goodbyes' for those ousted over misconduct. The current post-ministerial jobs watchdog, Acoba, will be abolished and replaced with a system that includes financial penalties for breaking lobbying and revolving door rules. These reforms aim to restore public trust and accountability in government following criticism of previous lax enforcement.
The changes are set to take effect from October.
