The UK government is overhauling its standards regime by establishing a new independent Ethics and Integrity Commission to enforce stricter rules on ministers' conduct.
Ministers who breach ethical standards or serve less than six months will lose their severance pay, ending the practice of 'golden goodbyes' for those ousted for misconduct. The long-criticized Advisory Committee on Business Appointments (Acoba) will be abolished, with its functions absorbed into the new commission, which will also have the power to impose financial penalties on former ministers who break lobbying rules. These reforms aim to restore public trust and accountability in government following years of scandals and criticism over lax enforcement.
The changes are set to take effect from October, fulfilling a key Labour manifesto promise.
