Schoolboy's Discovery Unveils 250-Year-Old Royal Navy Shipwreck in Orkney

A schoolboy's chance encounter with wooden ribs protruding from a remote Scottish beach led to the identification of a 250-year-old shipwreck on Sanday, one of the Orkney Islands.

Archaeologists and local volunteers used scientific analysis and historical research to confirm the wreck as the Earl of Chatham, a former Royal Navy frigate that later served as a whaler. The ship, which was involved in significant historical events such as the siege of Quebec, had remained hidden until storms exposed its remains in 2024.
