A schoolboy's chance discovery of wooden ship ribs on a remote Orkney beach has led archaeologists to identify the wreck as the Earl of Chatham, a Royal Navy frigate from the 18th century.
The ship, which later served as a whaler, was involved in historic events such as the siege of Quebec during the Revolutionary War era. Scientific analysis and community-led research, including dendrochronology, played a key role in solving the centuries-old mystery. The find highlights the importance of local involvement in heritage conservation and sheds new light on Britain's maritime history.
The wreck was uncovered on Sanday Island in early 2024 and has since been carefully studied and preserved.
