A schoolboy's chance encounter with wooden ribs protruding from a remote Scottish beach led to the identification of a 250-year-old shipwreck on Sanday, one of the Orkney Islands.
Archaeologists and local volunteers used scientific analysis and historical research to confirm the wreck as the Earl of Chatham, a former Royal Navy frigate that later served as a whaling vessel. The ship, which played a role in the siege of Quebec, was uncovered after a storm swept away the sand covering it. The discovery highlights the value of community involvement in heritage conservation and sheds new light on maritime history in the region.
The project combined dendrochronology, archival research, and local sleuthing to solve the centuries-old mystery.
