A schoolboy's chance discovery of wooden ship ribs on a remote Orkney beach led archaeologists to identify a 250-year-old shipwreck as the Earl of Chatham, a former Royal Navy frigate later used as a whaler.
The wreck, uncovered after a storm in February 2024, was found on Sanday Island and has since been studied using scientific analysis and historical research. The vessel played a role in significant historical events, including the siege of Quebec during the Revolutionary War era. The identification was a collaborative effort between scientists, local volunteers, and the community.
This find sheds new light on maritime history and the heritage of the Orkney Islands.
