The United States and Indonesia have reached a major trade agreement that will see Indonesia eliminate tariffs on over 99% of U.S. goods and remove key non-tariff barriers, opening up at least $50 billion in new market access for American businesses.
In exchange, the U.S. will impose a 19% tariff on Indonesian exports, down from a previously threatened 32%, and Indonesia will lift export restrictions on critical minerals vital to U.S. industries. The deal also includes significant purchases of U.S. agricultural products and Boeing jets by Indonesia. Both governments tout the agreement as a win for their economies, with U.S. tech and manufacturing sectors expected to benefit from eased digital and industrial trade barriers.
The agreement is being hailed as a model for future U.S. trade negotiations in the Asia-Pacific region.
