Russia and Ukraine have agreed to a significant exchange of prisoners of war and the repatriation of bodies of fallen soldiers during their latest round of talks in Istanbul.
Over 1,200 prisoners from each side are set to be exchanged, and Russia has returned the bodies of 1,000 Ukrainian soldiers. Despite these humanitarian agreements, the negotiations failed to produce any progress toward a ceasefire or a direct meeting between Presidents Zelensky and Putin. The talks were brief and highlighted ongoing deep divisions, with only limited proposals for short-term truces to evacuate the wounded.
The prisoner and body exchanges are seen as rare points of cooperation in an otherwise deadlocked conflict.
