The Barbados threadsnake, the world's smallest-known snake, has been rediscovered in Barbados after nearly two decades without a confirmed sighting.
Scientists had feared the tiny reptile, which can fit on a coin and measures just about four inches long, might have gone extinct. The snake was found during a dedicated search in March 2025, where researchers overturned hundreds of rocks in the forests of Barbados. Its rediscovery brings relief and excitement to conservationists, as the species was previously listed among thousands of 'lost to science' animals.
The find highlights the importance of ongoing efforts to locate and protect elusive and endangered species.
