The Barbados threadsnake, the world's smallest-known snake, has been rediscovered in Barbados after nearly two decades without a confirmed sighting.
Measuring just about 10 centimeters (4 inches) long and as thin as a strand of spaghetti, this elusive reptile was feared extinct by scientists. Its rediscovery came after conservationists and researchers overturned hundreds of rocks in the forests of Barbados, finally spotting the tiny snake in March 2025. The species had been listed among thousands of 'lost to science' animals, plants, and fungi.
This find brings hope for the survival of other elusive species and highlights the importance of ongoing conservation efforts.
