It should be nationalised but be run by people who know what their roles include. People who have worked in the roles they would be in charge of

 @9PN893Qanswered…9mos9MO

Yes, but it needs to have punishable contracts that mean if passengers suffer, they are compensated without having to appeal, where appropriate. Only allow them to make a certain amount of profit and the remaing profit invested back into the infrastructure. Some money can be put aside to help deal with compensation but if not used anually, is split between profit and infrastructure

It doesn't matter, just make sure there are enough workers and that trains actually turn up on time. The current rail network is a shambles.

 @9P78QLXanswered…10mos10MO

Fines on rail services companies that don't achieve sufficient performance criteria. Fines given back to service users

 @9P6TDWPanswered…10mos10MO

I'm divided on the topic, as a big trainspotter there are benefits and downsides to both privatisation and nationalisation.

 @9NRLT86answered…10mos10MO

Hire in loads of japanese people to run the UK railways so they are efficient. Japanese people love making railways efficient.

 @9NJZ58GUKIPanswered…10mos10MO

It’s useless and unreliable under current conditions it needs to change so it’s more reliable and cost effective

 @9NJ5Q8CLabouranswered…10mos10MO

Yes but only if they are held under strict guidelines that they must invest a % of their profits on maintenance & services without hiking prices up disproportionately

 @9N3PGPXLiberal Democratanswered…10mos10MO

A hybrid stance of freight privatisation but passenger rail, and the track operation, should be in public hands.

 @9M3DCXSanswered…11mos11MO

Privatization of the railways has led to increased prices and poor quality of service while shareholders regularly make huge profits.

 @9M3CR86answered…11mos11MO

I just think the strikes are getting out of hand and they need to realise that their actions are getting really selfish as people are losing jobs because of the trains not running.

 @9JZM429 answered…1yr1Y

Privatised networks have only been proven to be better in rare cases, such as Grand Central, but on the whole, nationalising the railways has proved to be much more efficient.

 @9QF653Hanswered…9mos9MO

The railways should be publicly owned and operated. The whole of the uk should be linked via a network. More people would use the trains cutting carbon and making the train the quickest cheapest option for travel. European trains are incredible. Why don’t we have this in the Uk?

 @9Q3GW57answered…9mos9MO

Yes but restrict pricing, ideally reducing it from where it is now and government overseas service level agreements from private companies

 @9PK3R9Nanswered…9mos9MO

should have an overhaul so costs can be bought down and salaries that warrant the jobs implemented and the workers work hard

 @9MRC28Nanswered…10mos10MO

I'm neutral in who owns it (Public or Private), but it should be heavily regulated either way to ensure that the outcome of the train companies always puts people first. The ticket system also needs to be modernized and favor the customer, rather than seeing customers have to pay admin fees and penalties when claiming back on tickets for trains that never turned up, were cancelled or delayed such that the journey was no longer practical.

it can be a viewing sence , so they can look at hte old british locomotive as it is like a museum.

Private companies, regulated by the government with elements of worker participation. Similar to TFL but with more worker participation.

 @8QVHR6Lanswered…4yrs4Y

They should be nationalised but still ran as separate franchises and like businesses returning profit to the treasury - LNER/East Coast Trains as the example there.

 @8QM42FJanswered…4yrs4Y

 @8PYXW9Qanswered…4yrs4Y

I think trains should be free and be put into tax bills contributions. As the cost to travel is essential for people to earn shouldn’t have a pay to earn.

 @8PXZLKManswered…4yrs4Y

Yes, but allow further Government insight to ensure the system gets refined, this allows for a better service and fairer price for commuters.

 @8PWVNQ9answered…4yrs4Y

 @8PD9JY3answered…4yrs4Y

no, as there are only a limited amount of providers IE northern rail and so competition wont be applicable/viable, you can't compete against yourself. However privatisation leads to more competitiveness

 @9BQWBV5Liberal Democratanswered…2yrs2Y

Either privet or nationalised but if privet one company overseeing the entire network

 @9B65DTSConservativeanswered…2yrs2Y

If a government was to have nationalised it before I was PM, I would not reverse the change.

 @99WZ73Ganswered…2yrs2Y

I feel they should be nationalised to reduce ticket prices but at the same time agree to regularly invest in the trains and carry out upgrades

  @9858GD4answered…2yrs2Y

Should be managed and owned privately but should receive government subsidisation.

 @9757DBNanswered…2yrs2Y

 @8SGS47Hanswered…4yrs4Y

No as look what happened with northern rail. The government can be held accountable at least

 @8GF2RZHanswered…4yrs4Y

Yes, but only if this service is run more efficiently and cheaper than state controlled rail

 @92P86X9answered…3yrs3Y

yes, but the Government needs to have much more oversight of the contracts

 @8XMTFCSLabouranswered…3yrs3Y

Yes, but the UK Government should reward public contracts to railway companies to operate the trains, whilst the government operates the tracks and sets fare prices.

 @8XF8GBCConservativeanswered…3yrs3Y

Allow the government to operate and maintain the tracks, with the ability to set fare prices. The government should pay private railway companies to operate the trains and any revenue collected, via fares set by the government and collected by the private sector companies, is to be reinvested into improving the services.

 @8WVZ47PConservativeanswered…3yrs3Y

Yes and government should stop their high regulations in the railway and on that stop setting ticket prices

 @8TBMVCKConservativeanswered…4yrs4Y

Yes, but abolish the franchise system in favour of concession contracts
