Currently UK trains are operated by private franchises and the tracks are operated by the government. Proponents argue that the system would run more efficiently if the tracks and trains were operated by private entities. Opponents of privatization claim that a single government train system would end the disruptions caused by the fractured franchise system.

Private is fine but it should be owned by British firms as it stands we're mostly owned by the German railway and where do you think our moneys going it's ridiculous
@9PHQQR610mos10MO
No, but the nationalised railways should be able to generate revenue from other sources. E.g. property development nearby stations and selling rights to run cabling along rail routes
@9P6LYBDConservative10mos10MO
Yes, the current privately owned sections run better than they did, the issue is the infrastructure that is still owned by the government
@9P2C7TR10mos10MO
No, but harsh penalties must be in place and higher compenation paid to consumers when trains are cancelled due to failed service, repairs and/or strikes
@9MYTVMB10mos10MO
Thought it was? Needs to be national, accountable, democratic and all the things British Rail wasn't
@9VM3W6M6mos6MO
Yes, as I think things will be done much more efficiently and will therefore help the economy but the government should put price caps on tickets
@9QQ33J79mos9MO
Yes but have more scrutiny/ powers to change contracts from the government if the operators are failing to run effectively
@9KSJ3LZ1yr1Y
Yes but only if companies agree to fair competition practices that benefit the public similar to costs seen in Europe
@9KLK3YZ1yr1Y
Yes so that people are not financially taken advantage of. No because the gov can be extremely slow with updating services and maintenance
@9MXCF7S10mos10MO
Have the government organised and competent enough to have a department to operate trains and tracks.
@9MF76NJ11mos11MO
Privatisation or nationalisation will not make a difference. It's all about investment, Private companies will try to avoid eating into their profits if not properly regulated and a nationalised system falls foul of governmental budgetary shortfall.
Yes but if they regularly cancel trains, run late or have exorbitant prices then they should be run by the state immediately with no compensation to the private owners.
@9FMGHFQ2yrs2Y
Privatise the trains but not the tracks
@9C6BLWG2yrs2Y
Yes but public made free by government
@96PQ24K2yrs2Y
not really for or against
@95RZNFF3yrs3Y
Yes, as long as doing so would reduce overall costs to customers. Guarantee's would need to be given.
@95BQTSGConservative3yrs3Y
Either all private or all public
@93F3CC53yrs3Y
No, should be a free mode of transport for those who can afford it
@937TBNH3yrs3Y
No, but allow more local control
@932PFCDLiberal Democrat3yrs3Y
Yes, but with more competition in order to increase service levels
Yes but with fare control
@8QB9H5TLiberal Democrat4yrs4Y
No, privatisation has failed.
@8MBGJSG4yrs4Y
No as the cost would rise
@8GZR9CN4yrs4Y
Yes, but allow regulations exorbitant prices
@99JFJ842yrs2Y
NO, but allow for private companies to compete on government owned track.
@9886HM82yrs2Y
Train spotters should killed
@976HG9X2yrs2Y
No. There should be greater government control of trains and fare prices etc.
@96VB8Z92yrs2Y
Indifferent - will be bad either way
@93B6HXC3yrs3Y
Privatise only main lines where there is no monopoly. Run the rest like a state enterprise.
@92Q6QBJ3yrs3Y
No but limit the outrageous profits the private companies make and mandate them to reinvest in the railways and penalise them financially for poor service.
@92SH78C3yrs3Y
Have state control of the tracks but allow private operators
@8Y3PNYB3yrs3Y
Yes but keep as one company managed with strict regulations
@8XCRLHF3yrs3Y
I think we should find a different answer for this. We should have normal, hygienic trains anyway but we shouldn't have to pay a lot of money for it because they don't actually have that money.
@8X5SHDM3yrs3Y
Privatise but only allow a percentage of profit ie 10%
@8VZC5FF4yrs4Y
Co-operation of govt and private sector
@8VR4PYX4yrs4Y
No, combination of government and private
@8TMQGQV4yrs4Y
Yes, but allow competition so that no line is monopolised.
@8TKYBK24yrs4Y
Private regulated companies on government controlled track
@8T6R22X4yrs4Y
The national railway needs transforming and updating. I would back either stance if this was achieved. A fast and up to date system would reduce the strain on the road network and reduce emissions.
@8SPGPKG4yrs4Y
Irrelevant as long as it’s properly funded
