Private is fine but it should be owned by British firms as it stands we're mostly owned by the German railway and where do you think our moneys going it's ridiculous

 @9PHQQR6answered…10mos10MO

No, but the nationalised railways should be able to generate revenue from other sources. E.g. property development nearby stations and selling rights to run cabling along rail routes

 @9P6LYBDConservativeanswered…10mos10MO

Yes, the current privately owned sections run better than they did, the issue is the infrastructure that is still owned by the government

 @9P2C7TRanswered…10mos10MO

No, but harsh penalties must be in place and higher compenation paid to consumers when trains are cancelled due to failed service, repairs and/or strikes

 @9MYTVMBanswered…10mos10MO

Thought it was? Needs to be national, accountable, democratic and all the things British Rail wasn't

 @9VM3W6Manswered…6mos6MO

Yes, as I think things will be done much more efficiently and will therefore help the economy but the government should put price caps on tickets

 @9QQ33J7answered…9mos9MO

Yes but have more scrutiny/ powers to change contracts from the government if the operators are failing to run effectively

 @9KSJ3LZanswered…1yr1Y

Yes but only if companies agree to fair competition practices that benefit the public similar to costs seen in Europe

 @9KLK3YZanswered…1yr1Y

Yes so that people are not financially taken advantage of. No because the gov can be extremely slow with updating services and maintenance

 @9MXCF7Sanswered…10mos10MO

Have the government organised and competent enough to have a department to operate trains and tracks.

Privatisation or nationalisation will not make a difference. It's all about investment, Private companies will try to avoid eating into their profits if not properly regulated and a nationalised system falls foul of governmental budgetary shortfall.

 @9NXBTLSLabouranswered…10mos10MO

Yes but if they regularly cancel trains, run late or have exorbitant prices then they should be run by the state immediately with no compensation to the private owners.

 @95RZNFFanswered…3yrs3Y

Yes, as long as doing so would reduce overall costs to customers. Guarantee's would need to be given.

 @99JFJ84answered…2yrs2Y

NO, but allow for private companies to compete on government owned track.

 @976HG9Xanswered…2yrs2Y

No. There should be greater government control of trains and fare prices etc.

 @93B6HXCanswered…3yrs3Y

Privatise only main lines where there is no monopoly. Run the rest like a state enterprise.

 @92Q6QBJanswered…3yrs3Y

No but limit the outrageous profits the private companies make and mandate them to reinvest in the railways and penalise them financially for poor service.

I think we should find a different answer for this. We should have normal, hygienic trains anyway but we shouldn't have to pay a lot of money for it because they don't actually have that money.

The national railway needs transforming and updating. I would back either stance if this was achieved. A fast and up to date system would reduce the strain on the road network and reduce emissions.
