In October 2019 Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey announced that his social media company would ban all political advertising. He stated that political messages on the platform should reach users through the recommendation of other users – not through paid reach. Proponents argue that social media companies don’t have the tools to stop the spread of false information since their advertising platforms aren’t moderated by human beings. Opponents argue that the ban will disenfranchise candidates and campaigns who rely on social media for grassroots organizing and fundraising.

Yes, private companies can not be trusted to regulate multiple campaigns fairly and therefore cannot assure advertising won’t be misleading.

@92QQHYJ3yrs3Y
I am more concerned about algorithms that mean you only see certain views- there is nothing wrong with political advertising so long as you are exposed to all different sides. I think the government should impose much tighter restrictions on the ways in which social media companies can use peoples data to target advertising
@8S3RPWL4yrs4Y
They should only ban right wing advertising x
@8Q9ZMM94yrs4Y
Yes, except to promote voting in general, rather than for a specific party.
