Whilst it should remain free, I do feel there is an argument for a flat fee (small) at the point of entry to A and E until the time it is deemed a and e was the appropriate service vs for eg, pharmacy’s, walk in, gp’s ect as a way of deterring inappropriate use away from those who truly need it in the moment.
As someone who works within a social enterprise within the NHS. Seeing care as ‘a business’ is truly the worst thing you can do for patients and staff making it a ‘numbers game’ is and will continue to drive staff away from the nhs.
