Usually when nuclear reactor are taken out of service and not replaced by new nuclear reactors, for example in Germany, they are replaced by fossil fuel sources of power such as gas. Nuclear power is more efficient than and greener than fossil fuels and, when technology is actually maintained and kept up to date as it should be (unlike in cases such as Chernobyl) it has the lowest direst death rate of any power source including green ones. I agree that green power sources (especially Thorium) are preferable to Uranium nuclear power plants but the shunning of nuclear is not to the benefit of the climate.
