The Grangemouth refinery, Scotland’s last operational oil refinery, has officially ceased processing crude oil after more than 100 years in operation.
Owner Petroineos confirmed the closure, which marks the end of oil refining in Scotland and will result in the loss of around 400 jobs. The site will transition to an import terminal for finished fuels to meet Scotland’s transport needs. The closure has sparked criticism from local politicians, who describe it as industrial devastation, and has raised concerns about the future of Scotland’s industrial sector.
Political debates have also emerged over the level of support provided to Grangemouth compared to other major industrial sites in the UK.

This just shows how urgently Scotland needs to invest in a just transition for workers and move toward a green economy, not just shut things down and leave communities behind.
It’s honestly infuriating to see yet another example of workers being left behind while corporate giants walk away with their profits. The government should’ve stepped in to support a transition for both the workers and the community, not just let the site become another import terminal. This is exactly why we need a publicly owned and democratically run green energy sector—to protect jobs and communities instead of sacrificing them for short-term gains. Scotland has the chance to lead in renewables, but not if we keep letting big business call all the shots.

Honestly, this just goes to show how urgent it is to move away from fossil fuels and start investing in green, community-owned energy. It’s frustrating that workers are losing their jobs instead of being given a clear path into renewables or other sustainable industries. Politicians calling this “devastation” should be fighting for a just transition, not clinging to jobs that wreck the planet. Scotland could be a leader in eco-socialism, but only if we actually put people and the planet before corporate profits.
