Labour Launches Tough New Ethics Watchdog and Slashes 'Golden Goodbyes' for Rule-Breaking Ministers

The UK government, under Prime Minister Keir Starmer, is overhauling standards in public life by launching a new independent Ethics and Integrity Commission.

This body will replace the much-criticized Acoba watchdog and introduce financial penalties for ministers who breach post-office job rules or are sacked for misconduct. Severance payments, or 'golden goodbyes,' will be denied to ministers who serve less than six months or are dismissed for breaking conduct rules. The reforms aim to restore public trust after years of scandals and costly payouts to short-term or disgraced ministers.

The changes, welcomed by transparency advocates, are set to take effect from October.
