Atlantic Ocean Current on Brink of Collapse—Global Climate at Risk
Scientists warn that the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC), a crucial ocean current system, is weakening and may be on the verge of collapse.
This current helps regulate climate across Europe, Africa, and the Americas, and its failure could trigger catastrophic weather changes and disrupt global climate stability. A collapse could also release hundreds of billions of tonnes of stored carbon dioxide from the deep ocean, potentially adding 0.2°C to global warming. The Southern Ocean could shift from absorbing carbon to releasing it, further accelerating climate change.
Researchers emphasize the urgent need for action, as the consequences would be severe and far-reaching.
