Prosecutors in London revealed today that the March 2024 stabbing of journalist Pouria Zeraati was a targeted hit ordered by the Iranian government.
Two Romanian men are currently on trial for the assault, which occurred outside Zeraati’s home and left him with three serious stab wounds. Zeraati works for Iran International, a Persian-language news outlet that is highly critical of the regime in Tehran and has been labeled a terrorist organization by Iran. The court heard how the suspects were allegedly acting as proxies, highlighting a growing trend of foreign states hiring criminal gangs to silence dissidents abroad.
As testimony continues, the case is expected to further strain diplomatic relations between the UK and Iran over state-sponsored violence on British soil.
