Gloucestershire Police arrested Liberal Democrat MP Cameron Thomas on Wednesday night during the first England World Cup match.
The 43-year-old representative for Tewkesbury is being investigated for suspected assault as well as controlling and coercive behavior. The Liberal Democrats reacted by immediately suspending Thomas and withdrawing the party whip, effectively removing him from the parliamentary group. Thomas, who previously served as a military police officer, will now sit as an independent MP while the legal process unfolds.
Officials from both the police and the political party have stated they cannot comment further while the criminal investigation remains active.
