Should the UK increase or decrease the amount of temporary work visas given to high-skilled immigrant workers?
Between 2008 and 2010 the United Kingdom began implementing a five tiered “points-based immigration system” which separated immigrant applicants into five tiers based on their employment potential. To secure a skilled worker visa, people have to qualify for 70 points. Having a job offer from an approved employer for a skilled job and being able to speak English will give 50 points. The applicant can achieve the remaining 20 points if they are due to be paid at least £25,600 a year. They can also gain extra points for having better qualifications (10 points for a relevant…

Decrease; companies are currently taking advantage of this scheme, and our citizens should be doing these jobs.
@9XCY2FVLiberal Democrat5mos5MO
Increase, it's more important to have the best and brightest supporting our country and economy than to worry about their country of origin
@9SBTMJP8mos8MO
Increase, but monitor these immigrant workers and make sure they're provided with social care and a decent pay rise. Our economy relies on these immigrant workers who help contribute to our economy.
@9QTTF8GLiberal Democrat9mos9MO
Decrease them, which would allow citizens to get jobs which would overall limit immigration and increase employment within the country, make skilled workers out of your own citizens without exploiting people from other countries for the low wage.
@9QMRH799mos9MO
immigrant workers visas would be provided on the basis that the seekers have a prospective employer supporting the process.
@9QJHTQX9mos9MO
I’m happy with the current amount BUT the government should provide more incentives to prepare our citizens for these jobs
@9QJ439X9mos9MO
We do not need more doctors from foreign countries. We need to improve things for people wanting to be doctors in this country. No one wants to be a doctor because it’s terrible pay for long hours.
@9QHCGKL9mos9MO
The issue isn't legal migrants taking job vacancies, it is those who are here illegally/working illegally who are circumventing our laws. The companies and individuals should be held accountable.
@9QH56TS9mos9MO
Why we are hiring skilled resources from other countries when our unemployment rate is too high is baffling. We should invest in our people and train them. It should not be aceptable to refuse a job and claim benefits if you are able to do it.
@9QGZ8429mos9MO
The country needs illegal immigrants to help run the country but it should be better managed and vetted
@9QF4CJ49mos9MO
Work out a sensible system that matches skill needs to people wanting to come without damaging the economies they come from.
@9QDRBBX9mos9MO
Only people who can financially support themselves and have a high level job offer , or who are seeking employment
Government should do more to ensure the British population are highly skilled instead of criticising people who have worked hard to come here and reap the benefits of those jobs
@9QCW2JB9mos9MO
Yes they should increase these to allow skilled immigrants to work. It should be easier to extend to permanent work visas too
@9Q8XPZF9mos9MO
The number should follow the needs of the UK economy. Wages and conditions should be more tightly controlled
@9Q8T3RJ9mos9MO
Keep the same amount of temporary work visas but the government should provide more incentives for citizens to work
Where required applicants should be given the visas but only after passing strict control assessment
@9Q7BWRY9mos9MO
We should try to train up British workers first but we should allow high skilled workers to come to UK to work in those industries where there is a deficiency of British workers.
@9Q3KK8Z9mos9MO
It adapt according to the need at the time - but with a long term strategy to better meet our own needs using people born and trained in the UK
@9PZ2RJC9mos9MO
We’d be better investing in our own people and training and educating them instead of having to ship people in.
I want less skilled immigrants to be allowed in, the backbone of society has been built in this. However it has allowed lower wages with i hate.
@9PWDD5L 9mos9MO
Increase but encourage our own citizens to be able to fill these rolls to naturally reduce the amount of visas granted
@9PQWDD29mos9MO
The numbers granted should differ year on year depending on how successful the government has been in developing and engaging home grown talent.
@9PQPXSS9mos9MO
Increase, with a longer term commitment to provide incentives for our own citizens to take these jobs
@9PPF3DT9mos9MO
Increase, as long as the workers are employed in a role that utilises their skill-set. Many graduates are coming to the UK, doing a skilled degree and then working in care homes as they can't get a job utilising their degree/skill-set.
@9PK9R6310mos10MO
Temporarily increase because our economy relies on businesses hiring the highest skilled workers, but at the same time provide more incentives to prepare our citizens for these jobs.
@9P8F6TK10mos10MO
Increase but monitored by a committee or body of people making sure all companies are hiring citizens first and if citizens are unavailable then open the doors to other persons.
@9P7K8KVLiberal Democrat10mos10MO
The UK should invest in education both broadly and narrowly to these high skilled jobs, amd now should continue letting people move here and share their skills
@9P6LYBDConservative10mos10MO
Immigrants are people who move to the UK permanently, if done through the correct process they shouldn't need a Visa. Money earned in the UK should not be "sent back home" their families should have immigrated with them
@9P52KFX10mos10MO
The skill level is irrelevant, visas should be made available for workers in the industries that need workers
Decrease because these workers are taken advantage of, and there needs to be more incentive for citizens to work towards these jobs
@9P2DTKV10mos10MO
It is not a simple case of a blanket increase or decrease. Work visas are crucial in bringing talented labour into the UK but temporary visas need reform to ensure that they are not exploitative
@9NJQYB210mos10MO
decrease it but don't completely stop it, provide more training for British people to do the jobs and the government should provide better incentives so people want to do the job.
@9NJGC6310mos10MO
I think we should look at bringing more of these high skilled workers in on longer term visas to contribute to the country, short term can then leave gaps which are harder to fill. Also do more to prepare British citizens for these jobs - better education at young age
I’m more or less satisfied with the current amount, but the government should provide more incentives to prepare its citizens for these structural changes to the economy
They should be offered visas that are not temporary, so they can have more security in their position in this country should they choose to live here
Neither increase or decrease. But more incentives and skilled apprenticeships should be provided for.
@9N76TCY10mos10MO
Skilled workers for the nhs should be increased as a lot of our current waiting times are due to lack of skilled worker
@9N3SLM510mos10MO
Try to reduce. Train the existing UK population and allow other countries to retain skills for the sake of their economies.
@9N38K6810mos10MO
I think there should be incentives to encourage those unemployed to seek employment and improve high skilled work benefits, eg pay junior doctors more, but have the means in place to seek high skilled workers from overseas if gaps need to be filled
@9MQVRP310mos10MO
If the individual qualifies then should be given a work visa. The qualification should be be of a high standard.
@9MQS8BM10mos10MO
it should be based on our needs at the time overhiring in an area creates more problems than it solves
@9MPT7V910mos10MO
Increase/decrease the amount of work visas based on the job demand in the uk for both high-skilled and low-skilled jobs. Fill demand but don’t let people not work if they are able to generate an income
Increase but introduce a minimum wage for high-skilled immigrants so guarantee that they are paid fairly and keeps the job market competitive for UK workers.
@9JY2C2H1yr1Y
Increase but ensure the jobs are offered without a lower cost therefore making it a level playing field for UK citizens
@9JLQYV61yr1Y
Sectors critically low on workers should be supported on obtaining the workers it needs, whilst allowing firms to offer competitive salaries in these areas
Increase, but have incentives to prepare our citizens for these jobs, too, and don't allow lower wages to be paid than the legal minimum purely for immigrant workers.
@9HNNJF71yr1Y
Increase compared to the most recent laws, but the government should also provide more incentives to UK nationals to do these jobs. However, not all vacancies are going to be fulfilled by UK nationals, and so there is a need to increase immigration as well.
@9GNSCLX1yr1Y
There should be more government incentive for tuition and training positions for English nationals especially in regard to the councils, schools, NHS and other somewhat public services
@9GLQ2VN1yr1Y
I don't want to decrease work visas however laws and regulations need to be put in place to prevent the exploitation of the working class and immigrants from companies.
@B2994NK3mos3MO
Depends on the market so if there is a shortage in that field and we cannot get any of our generations into that field then we need to attract those people from abroad
I think it should be based on at the time if we need high skilled immigrant workers instead of just a fixed number
@9QQNPX69mos9MO
Increase, but only in sectors where the British economy is lacking in excess employment. Inviting experts to teach future generations is also important.
@9QPB8K29mos9MO
Make it a fair opportunity for all. If they’ve got the skills & determination to get the job done the best way then it’s fair game
@9QNYL8Z9mos9MO
Our citizens should be working these jobs less British people unemployed but open to immigrants to have these opportunities too
@9MYJRXH10mos10MO
Are these pushing wages down? If they are it is more important to clamp down on businesses abusing this for cheaper workers
@9MTRGS410mos10MO
Increase, and decouple the visas from the employers, they are being used to force people to accept worse conditions and pay.
@9MSK7DM10mos10MO
change the definition of high skilled worker to be more strict, but provide more visas for people who meet the more demanding requirements
@9M4QMVZLiberal Democrat11mos11MO
Increase, sector-based, e.g. the NHS appears to be in urgent need of high-skilled workers. So based on the business needs schemes that make it easier for certain groups of high-skilled immigrants to enter the UK.
@9M3KF8J11mos11MO
Allow anyone who want to work and live here and isn't a threat to societ let them come andmake it easier for people
@9LR4JLH11mos11MO
If there is a need for it, then we can borrow citizens from other countries who are paid a decent wage
@9LR2Z8G11mos11MO
Sustain the same number of visas in the short term. Increase training and education for UK citizens with a long-term view to upskilling the domestic workforce and reducing the economy's dependence on workers from abroad.
Increase but also encourage own citizen to be high skilled as well as discourage the lowering of wages
@9LP935RLiberal Democrat12mos12MO
We should get the best people for the job, but look into why our citizens are not getting them and provide incentives to achieve them
@9LMZBBP12mos12MO
No work visas should be temporary. If a worker and their employers are satisfied with each other, the worker should be able to remain as long as they want to.
@9LLS6ZW12mos12MO
Priority should be increasing pay for domestic workers so they stay in these jobs, and just give work visas to help fill in jobs that our struggling to be filled for other reasons
Yes, and visas should be limited to specific work categories where there are known skills shortages.
Increase, but only as a temporary measure while the government implements a strategy to train British people in the skills that businesses demand.
@9FZC9QD1yr1Y
Increase, but also increase protections for them so employers cannot take advantage of their lower wages
Why are we skilling emigrants?
@9F9X9462yrs2Y
Increase if the country requires more high skilled immigrants
@9F9NW9S2yrs2Y
Increase the amount of visas on mid skilled and high skilled
@9F87B9V2yrs2Y
yes but a far wage should be paid other wise this could lead to exploitation.
@9F5GWDN2yrs2Y
Train and employ UK citizens first.
@9BL92C72yrs2Y
give them permanent stay
@9BC77VLLiberal Democrat2yrs2Y
I am satisfied with the current amount, but work towards decreasing by training citizens for these jobs
We should work to prevent companies from taking advantage of this program to decrease wages
@99SW5L82yrs2Y
We should give permanent ones instead.
@97PH4972yrs2Y
They should both be the same
@96Q7SRKConservative2yrs2Y
Need to encourage British workers first
@96PB28C2yrs2Y
If native skilled workers were paid enough, they wouldn't leave for better-paid jobs overseas, so that's a question that really can't be answered without other factors taken into account.
@96NXXFW2yrs2Y
Increase, and increase wages for workers
@96HV6KT2yrs2Y
If we need them and they've benn vetted properly
@96F3WYJ2yrs2Y
i have chlamydia so decrease the surplus population
@95SFSZR3yrs3Y
I am satisfied with the current amount but the government should provide incentives for citizens too.
@95K7NHZ3yrs3Y
Maintain until more UK citizens can fulfill the roles
Increase, as long as the workers are paid the equivalent amount as any equivalent UK worker
@93DSGK33yrs3Y
Invest more in training UK residents in those skilled areas.
Should be based on skills gaps and reviewed regularly.
@92QC9M53yrs3Y
Increase but pay them a fair wage.
@92QBNGB3yrs3Y
I think immigrant workers should be given more opportunities to permanently settle in the UK
@927GHKG3yrs3Y
Increase but the government should also provide more incentives to prepare our citizens for these jobs and not used as excuse to not hire local
Decrease with an exception for the NHS
@8YGGHN73yrs3Y
Should only give them if they agree to join trade unions and pay taxes to stop undercutting of wages and conditions. We should also be investing in vocational education instead of being reliant on immigrant labour.
@Bethrachel3yrs3Y
Increase, as long as it’s regulated and not being taken advantage of
@8XJCF2Y3yrs3Y
@8WX7Z4V3yrs3Y
No Visa's, allow anyone in (barring violent criminals)
@8TVB3D34yrs4Y
There should be stricter controls on some roles where our citizens want to learn and participate in these jobs (e.g. medicine, law) and where participation depends on completing in-work training in order to qualify. Highly skilled immigrant workers should have access to the job market after these qualifications periods are complete.
@8TN8MJ24yrs4Y
Depends on economic needs
