Two non religious people can cohabit and informally share finances without getting married, I don't think it's necessary. It is a religious ceremony meaning only religious people (regardless of sexual orientation) should use it because it belongs to them. Sexual orientation doesn't come into the question there? But assuming the same sex people are both religious, yes I don't see why not it's irrelevant.
