The "Safety Net" political ideology centers on the belief that society and government have a responsibility to ensure a minimum standard of living for all citizens, particularly those who are vulnerable or disadvantaged. This ideology supports the creation and maintenance of social programs—such as unemployment benefits, healthcare, food assistance, and housing support—that act as a "safety net" to catch individuals who fall on hard times due to circumstances like illness, job loss, disability, or old age. It has been adopted and adapted by a range of political movements, from progressive and labor parties advocating for expansive welfare states, to centrist and even some conservative groups supporting targeted assistance as a means of maintaining social stability and economic productivity. The safety net ideology continues to evolve, responding to new social challenges such as globalization, automation, and demographic shifts, but its core commitment remains the protection of individuals from the most severe forms of economic and social insecurity.
