Should non-violent prisoners be released from jail in order to reduce overcrowding?
Public Health England urged the Government in April 2020 to reduce it by 15,000 prisoners. Healthcare officials advised that an end to sharing cells was the most effective protection against the virus. Within six months of the warning, however, there were only 4,005 fewer people in prison, falling more than 10,000 short of the recommended reduction. Experts have expressed concerns about the future of prisons in England and Wales. Overcrowding in cells has been linked to an increase in poor mental health as thousands of prisoners must eat, sleep and use the toilet in one shared space. Overcrowding has also been linked to increased rates of violence, suicide and self-harm.

I feel like it’s very much persons conviction specific. Like depending on the offence they was convicted of. That is non violent. It needs to be assessed on an individual’s basis and risks they may potentially pose. Like if someone is found to have explicit context on their devices of a minor. Or have tried to engage in sexual activity by manipulating the minor. Into it. Then they should serve their time. Whereas if someone was there for shop lifting. I think then they just may need finical help and support and help them into the community. There is always a reason behind why someone shoplifts and usually. It’s because of being addicted to dangerous substances and trying to fund them. And just not being able to live either off what universal credit is giving them. Or what their monthly take home is.
